Help with pronunciation (Chiggie ... ?)

Post by TheDukester »

Okay, I've read it, I know what it means ... but I'm not sure I've ever actually said it out loud:

"deus ex machina"

And now I'm paranoid of getting it wrong. Pardon my Ebonics, but would it be like this phonetically?

DAY-us Ecks MASH-in-uh

(Keeping in mind that I speak American English, of course ...)

Yeah, I try to avoid saying it out loud around people myself...

Did you look here http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/ ... %20machina? there's a clumsy pronunciation but it's most likely correct.

"deus ex machina"

I think I would pronounce it:

do- ex- MA she na

but that is mainly because the deus reminds me of the french word for two.

It's a hard K sound.

Also with Latin there are almost always at least two ways to pronounce something. My Latin teacher said he was teaching us the more German way, and that's what's on this clip. I'm not sure if the more Italian way would say it differently.

Ok, fuck links. The way to pronounce it is DAY-us EX MAH-KIN-AH. My English teacher taught me this in eighth grade.

Nice one, Sloey. So you haven't been expelled from school yet?

ZING!

(Poor Sloewurm, he don't get no respect. ;) )

Sorry, I've been asleep! And playing on Twitter. :P

"DAY-us eks MAH-kee-nuh" is how I say it, FWIW.

(I guess you could get away with a "DEE-us" in the States. But listeners might confuse that with dies "day" (DEE-ess). Dies Irae "Day of Wrath" is another fun one. EE-ray or EAR-eye? ;) )

I say "deuce ecks ma-SHEEN-a". Which is wrong.

HBJ,
happy to help out.

In this thread that's the whole point!

I learnt deus ex machina from The Simpsons actually. In one episode God resets everything by clapping his hands and saying DEUS EX MACHINA!

Anyway another one is non-sequiter (= does not follow; logically that is). How do you pronounce that? Non seh-quit-er or non seh-quite-er?

Well, it always helps to spell it right. ;)

This one's a lot easier: NON SEH-kwi-tuhr. (Like "Say, quitter!" but with the "say" shortened to the beginning of "SEven"?)

I always knew how to say "chip-oat-lay". At least... I assume that's how you say it. That's how we do here.

Chimera is "Keye-mare-ah" (eye, and mare like female horse)
