I've met Nader several times. The one time I really remember was
back in the 80's, he showed up wearing this beat-to-hell brown suit
and run-down shoes. Somebody commented that those were the
same shoes he'd had for two years. Drove himself in a beat-to-hell
Datsun, I think it was.

All the other pols showed up in slick suits & $100 haircuts (that was
alot of money in those days. Nickles had pictures of bumble
bees on them back then - "Give me five bees for a quarter", we'd say),
big Lincoln Town Cars with drivers, staff & so forth. Nader was just
Nader. You can say what you want about his politics, and Lord knows
there's plenty to say, but I'll tell you he's an honest man and believes
in what he says he believes in ......

There was a time when he was doing something useful; that cannot be denied. But I fear that time is long past.

I saw him on one of the late night shows while home in September. He just came across as a loon-in-the-bad/unfunny-sense.

You can be honest and well-intentioned as humanly possible...and still harmful as hell for all that. :(

I don't disagree with that - Nader's out-lived his usefullness as a politcal
figure and cost us dearly in 2000 - the far-lefties that voted for him in
protest could have been the difference .... he's been a spoiler on several
go-rounds and the Party Heads will never forgive him for that.

I'm just saying that of everyone on the scene in my life time, Nader
was the only one I thought I could trust, in that I belived he believed.

And the battle against the auto companies in the 70s will earn him his
rightful place in history. The rest will be glossed over, as it should be.

I wrote a paper on him in school, he has my respect.

He does seem to be a few cards short of a full deck now though.

The supposed radical ideas of Nader were exaggerated in the extreme, much in the same way Obama has been lauded and Palin has been demonized (though in Palin's case, I'm all for it :)). He was ahead of his time, but many of his ideas made sense and were doable, in spite of the nature of his reforms. He wasn't a stupid man and I believe he did think out the consequences of his proposals, much more thoroughly than most politicians. But I do believe he was overly ambitious, too demanding and far too open for his own good. Many of his ideas would make sense over a long term period of time and would work best as a social shift with eventual change occurring after adequate preparation. As I said before, the 4 year system just isn't a reality with governments in their current state of disrepair.

That said, I definitely wouldn't have voted for Nader either, if I were an American, but not for the same reasons that most people chose. At least, that's what I like to tell myself :)

Ask not what your deity can do for you, but what you're incapable of doing other than whining to your deity :)

Oh, and did everyone see this?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k4aHL12vtEM

Palin gets prank called by a Quebecois radio DJ. For six minutes, she thinks he's Sarkozy, the President of France, who doesn't speak English by the way. Six minutes littered with clues and bad jokes, and she just obliviously spouts the same drivel she does at her rallies. If you listen to his accent, you can tell right off the bat that he's French-Canadian, rather than French.

Sometimes you just have to smile and nod while the world around you makes an ass of itself... what else can you do?

Oh well... I guess we'll find out who god picked to run god's favorite country soon enough.
