dial-up issue related to modem driver ... got an update notice from the OEM last week -
new driver, installed, issue resolved ....

if anybody here is using Seven, I've uncovered alot of the hidden misfeatures and
waded thru tons and tons of bad shareware to discover the handful of useful third
party utilities ... like all the previous windows, the more I figger out the more I
like it - question is, why should I have to dig around for info and add-ons to make
the thing to my liking ?

f'instance, the QuickLauch appears to have been removed from 7, in favor of "pin to taskbar" ....

but the QuickLaunch is still embedded, just disabled - takes a manual registry tweak to unlock ....

&etc...

if no-one is using 7, I'll not bother with the details of all this ....

i am on 7 but my main cause of moaning comes from the interface, that vista/windows style that treats you like a retard with giant icons and lodsa "help"...

hate it...

i understand it is made for people who haven't got a clue but I don't really care about them

using the 64bit version at work. Its a POS like the previous versions of windows. Same reasons as always.
I dont like any of them, but I use it for work cause I have to and for compatability I use XP Sp3 at home.

this search thing has something to do with the fucked-up indexing stubs; it's clear that the "search" in explorer.exe is not the same
command that is embedded in the start menu ... but I don't care, now, the Freecoders had provided a fantastic little program
that just scans the Master File Table on the partition ... stupidly quick, too, and supports the * wildcard ...

UltraSearch 1.4.0.85 - you can search that and locate a hundred freeware sites to download it from,
or get it from the developers themselves :

and it turns out these cats are the brain-children of the guy who wrote XDIR (which is still available!) - any of you old heads who
cut yer teeth on Bucky Bits and the DOS command lines remember this one - it's the one that would double-format your whole
hard drive with one keystroke ... bad-ass shit back then, when the User controlled the Machine, and not the other way around ....

As a Windows user ONLY WHEN I CAN'T AVOID IT, this is all somehow strangely irrelevant to my interests...

I'm finding the "Freecorder4" applications to be helpful ...

by default, it will install a mostly useless toolbar into your default browser
(if your default browser is IE or Firefox; I haven't tried to see what the
toolbar does to Opera & Chrome, got a feeling it's just not compatible -
which is no big deal; like I said, the toolbar is mostly useless, and all
the components run independently, anyway ..)

what this thing does is cache every video in whatever format that plays in your browser,
and that doesn't matter what browser; you can play a youtube in IE, a USstream in firefox,
a porntube in Chrome, a southpark on comedycentral.com in Opera, try to get the HoneyTrap
to take off the wifebeater on MSN messenger, and watch a Willie Nelson video on RealPlayer
one right after the other, or at the same time, and Freecorder will cache it all - you can set the
limit of the cache as well ...

then any of these clips can be save as their original format or converted to flash or .avi or
several other formats ...

I've found it real useful - I set the cache limit real big, go surfing for awhile, not bothering with
saving video clips I might want right then and there - review the Freecorder's cache and then
save or delete ... I've not had any problems with it (yet) - the free version has more than enough
features to be useful to me, I'm not sure what the upgrade/premium features are .... hell, I'm
not sure if there is a premium version ...

anyway, since I was over in the Mozilla thread, I remembered I had wanted to just report
here about the "Win7 Service Pack 1 (x64)" ...

now, I can't locate how large the download was, but it was not tremendously huge, I'm
thinking maybe 30MB .... the install does take some time (as a disclaimer on the actual
page on the Dev site states) about 20 minutes, with a shut-down & restart halfway thru ...

as to what it does, fuck if I know ... I regularly install all the daily & weekly "Updates" & "Security Updates",
so I don't know what is in the "collected" pack that has not already been installed (altho, also on the
actual Service Pack 1 page, there is a long list of that shit .... tl;dr)

the only visible difference is that my desktop key now says this machine is running
"Windows 7 Build 7601" ....

I have windows 7 home 64 bit at home now (girlfriend paid for the family 3 pack -not a bad deal, upgrade 3 machines for 150 bucks) hers and mine and one license spare.

It works, dont like it for the most part,(getting to anything is twice as hard, and involves more dam screens) Lotta older games I have just don't work, mainly cause of the 64 bit issue. I bet they would on the 32 bit version, but seems going backwards. I have my XP SP3 32 bit partition still available, I just switch over and run old stuff without worry.

As for SP1, its a lot of fixes, and enhancements, if you want specifics here is a snipet of some of it:

"Windows 7 Service Pack 1 adds support for Advanced Vector Extensions (AVX), a 256-bit instruction set extension for processors, and improves IKEv2 by adding additional identification fields such as E-mail ID to it. In addition, it adds support for Advanced Format 512e as well as additional Identity Federation Services. Some programs have compatibility issues with SP1 and a limited number of programs may experience a loss of functionality..........."

Approaching 2 years for WIn7, I would just look for it being stable after the patch (doesn't blow away your data after patch, um.. everything was working before works after etc.).

I got majority of my basement (new triplex moved into at end of June/July) in order, with all my computer stuff. Going back to working on Unix(BSD) and linux(CENTOS) and stuff I haven't been able to do since I separated from the "B" two years ago.(including regular drinking)
