This is pretty much he-said she-said right? Unless those cops had a camera on their dash I don't see how they can really resolve this one way or another. He says they started it, they say he started it.

Who?

Excuse me, I meant, yawn.

Cop, customs officer, airport security personnel, whatever: they tell you to do something you do it, chop chop. You stay in your car until they ask you to get out. Period.

Hasn't this braintrust ever watched COPS?

And he's a Canadian, right? Of course he's got an attitude. :P

Seconded.

Sound and fury, signifying nothing.

Never heard of him until this moment. Of course, a great irony in this sort of thing is that his sales are bound to go up for the next three weeks or so.

And when Kevin sees that, he'll rush out to have himself arrested as well.

Wait for it! :P

So I go up to the border and give a customs agent the finger and we have an "altercation", some how I dont think it hits the blogsphere or becomes national news. I think, quietly.. I got jail.. dont pass go.. dont collect 200.

Him being an author (not well known to boot) had nothing to do with it. Just a guy who fucked up at the border and looking for sympathy to help pay his lawyer fees.

Wonder what caused them to search in the first place? hmmmm or was it just normal search and he was an impatient ass?

ultimately wanders down the who cares rabbit hole.

The Canadian border gaurd once took apart my grandpa's car peice by peice, bolt by bolt, right down to ripping apart all the uphostry and everything, then essentially left him sitting on the side of the road with a couple tools to put it back together himself.

Why? Why, you ask? Because he had bought bannana, and when they told him he couldn't bring them into Canada he refused to chuck them, and decided to argue.

Don't fuck with the boarderguard!

I'm pretty sure he meant the author.

Yes, it certainly can be both!

And yes, my grandpa was being a dick. Taking his car completely apart was maybe a wee over-reaction though...

In my own personal experience, which is obviously a small sample, the Canadian border guards have been complete dicks, while the Mexican border guards are extremely friendly. I mean of course the American border guards in each case but the respective borders that they guard. I have never been able to figure out why that is. Like I said, it is a small sampling, but it holds true for me 100 % of the time coming from Canada, and about 80% or so coming from Mexico. Maybe it is like my experiences with the Oakland police versus the Portland police. The Oakland police are too busy fighting real crime to try to be dicks, while the Portland police have nothing to do but rouse the occasional sleeping homeless person with a swift kick to the ribs. Or maybe I am a bit delusional in my old age (one most certainly can't discount that).

If all he did was get out of his car and ask what was going on then that is not a reason for them to do what they did. If someone even a cop or a border gaurd starts searching my car I'm going to ask why. Anyone as a perfect right to know that. I have watched cops and I have seen them over react as well.

Ok here I go..

First rule of fight club... oh wait wrong thought.

Crossing borders survival:

Rule one: Don't fuck with the man!!

Rule Two: Hide in Plain Sight

Rule Three: Always have a backup plan

Rule four: 250 bucks rolled up and stuffed in your sock, and a good number for a bail bondsman

Rule Five: Avoid Search with a large distraction.. Hint is something that assaults the senses...Vomit in your back seat... dead fish decomposed for a few days... A black panther (not the 1960's radical group member... a jungle cat) in the back seat, A hot female in tight clothes in the front seat, or something similar.

Rule Six: smile and never let them see ya sweat!

Rule 7: when in doubt refer to rule number 1!

Anyone want to bet me $100 that Pretentious Author Syndrome had at least a little bit to do with this? As in: "Your rules don't apply to me; I'm an author!"

"I'm an author!" + "I'm Canadian!", perhaps?

(Saw that South Park movie again over the weekend, so I've had the "Unclef*cker" and "Blame Canada!" songs playing in my head all week. :D )

Has anyone had a look at the guy's blog? I haven't.

Level of interest doesn't extend that far. ;)

That desperate bitch wants to be the first best selling author to have airport security shove their rubber gloved hands up his pasty arse. They'll probably find Jabecca's missing wedding ring up there.

Not to mention Jimmy Hoffa, The Ark of the Covenant, Amelia Earhart, the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel, Mu, Atlantis, The Holy Grail, and Brian's childhood innocence. (Or was it just his dry, non-booze-sodden brain?) :P
