Cool! I grew up playing on Cheetham Hill National Battlefield. My parent's neigborhood butts against it.

It's been a long time since I've seen a re-enactment.

Have fun to whom ever attends or participates in this one.

As SR probably knows, Kennesaw Mt. National Battlefield is next to Cheetham Hill, where I grew up. They used to do re-enactments there every Sunday. We used to be able to set our clocks to the cannon fire at noon. From the original cannons, too! (I assume they were federal cannons since they were at the base of the mountain and the rebels were entrenched on top.) For some reason they stopped doing it, though. They have a very nice museum there which really impressed me as an eight-year-old and I've been a Civil War buff ever since.

The Union troops never made it up the mountain and after several tries flanked it and moved on towards Atlanta. The rest is history...

It's a beautifull park with trails even KJA could probably hike.

Honestly. I liked the book's premise, and some of the ideas, but it was written so... I don't know how put it. Simple. It was a very simple, simple book. The Harback was probably triple-spaced to get the pagecount.

If the South had won the war, slavery would have ended due to pressure within the community to prevent war again, since they would have barely won. So, all of those who think it was about slavery -- it wasn't. It was about the Confederates having the right to inter-state commerce and price control, which the federal government jacked them over the coals with because of slavery.

Lincoln brought about the slavery thing, since that was the biggest issue in the North that they had with the south.

I prefer not to argue this in mixed company (yankees).

I am mixed company. I am in the state that almost imploded when a southern government attempted to set up a militia inside of the State of Missouri. When the southern militia rose, Northern sympathizers chased down the rebels, and killed them. Over, and over.

My state still is in a 50/50 North/South influence.

that movie's fucking hilarious !!

full of some real live bullshit, real simple-minded hate-on-whitey
Spike Lee kinda bullshit, but some of it is brilliantly funny.

what you really need to read is Howard Means,
CSA: Confederate States of America
1998, William Morrow ISBN 0-688-16187-1

devolves into a bullshit murder mystery,
but the set-up is excellent, a plausible scenario -

in the bullshit movie above, the solution to "Confederate Reconstruction"
is to make the North take slave, too.

in this book, in the late 1870s it is clear to the CSA that slavery is
unsustainable (as Lee & Jackson said), so the slaves are set free,
and a totally segregated "separate but equal" society forms.

like I said, real piss-poor writing as far it goes, you see all the plot
"twists" & the final resolution coming from way off, but the only
book I've read that dealt with the "South wins the War" theme
realistically.

BTW- my favorite scene from the movie is the mock-up 1940s
movie "the Jefferson Davis Story" where the house negro (played
by a famed British stage actor in blackface) says, in a British accent -

"Scuse me, suh, but if'n you'd takes an idea from a no-account nigger like me ..."

I thought it was a laugh riot too.

Allthough Spike Lee isn't credited on the Wiki page, I KNOW I saw his name in the credits on IFC.

I think too litle emphasis is put on the American Civil War in American History. As one living in the Deep South, I tell you these wounds are far from healed.

Y'all laugh when I say there's another revolt coming...

Michael Savage said in a show this week,

"The White Male. If you watch extreme fighting, you see a part of the White Male that has been suppressed for 30 years, but it's still there. It's there, and it's ugly. You want to see what the White Male, who still happens to be the majority in case your forgot, is capable of? Watch this extreme fighting. Why do you think we are so interested in this violence? Because it's apparent the White Male is angry. And don't doubt it, there' a rage that's waiting for a revolution. You think you can just push around the White Male, step on him, spit on him, throw him aside like scum? You're mistaken. There's an ugly side to the White Male, believe it."

He has a point. There's a revolution brewing -- the validity of it, though, may be too short too soon, and discouraged. I don't know what I would do if there was another Civil War.

say, Freak -

I'm about 90% sure I'm going to make the Chickamauga event this year -
depends on if the 53rd Alabama boys will let me portray General Hannon or not -
they take this event kinda serious, it's on the just-this-side-of-crazy-hardcore
authentic, and long grey beards in the ranks just don't look right to them, even
if Chick Creek was in 63 - besides, ain't no fucking way I'm humpin' it up and
down them hills (who am I, adventure-harder Keith J. Anderhack ?) or sleeping
on the rocks - I want a horse & a tent & negro servants ....

anyway, the event is 17-19 September - I remember telling you about it last year -
the ChickChatt park has got to be less than 100 miles from Atlanta - but you had
tickets to that comic book thing & a hack to corner - I'll bet it's the same weekend
again, too ....

just a heads-up .... from the time you spend playing "Antietam", I'll bet a gold
Confederate twenty-dollar piece you'd get hooked on playing in real-time ...

//edit//
should read my own threads - last year's DragonCon conflict was with the Battle of Atlanta event -
I had been thinking about the Chick Creek event last year, too, and the year before ....

97th Regimental String Band was at the Nash Farm event - those guys are too cool for school, as it were -
we had them out here at all the Forts in December for all the Christmas parties & events - they're from
Florida, do a show in uniforms from both sides, about as authentic & period-correct as it gets ....

Wow, and I thought no one took the south's history seriously. Maybe living in chattown isn't so underatted after all. Were not so far from Atlanta that dragoncon is a immigration of sorts but we are assualted by civl war reinactments all the time. :sigh: Maybe I'm just disgruntled by the fact I have been to a reinactment but not dragoncon yet.
Sad day.
