Im not joking.
I live in south wales uk, half the people I know have been raped as kids and adults, some of the regularly. why do you think im a counselor?

do you think having cctv everywhere helps? No it doesnt
do you think having armed police on our streets helps? No it doesnt
do you think a social taboo about even discussing this subject helps? No it doesnt

the only people who have helped me personally in this issue also organise beating the crap out of ethnic groups on a regular basis. I am involved with trying to dissuade racism and persuade aggressors to target the violence where it is better suited. I don't expect they care much who they are kneecapping after all, they just want to kneecap people.
We live in a sick and twisted world.
What sort of a counselor would do this?
Is there a thread in this forum to discuss morality & ethics or can we continue the topic here? Considering that the thread title could be interpreted to refer to the monitoring of all our activities eg; taped conversations etc.
That's how I wrote the novel, wanting you to participate with the best of your own imagination. I did not aim for the lowest common denominator and 'write down" to anyone. You and I have a compact and my responsibility is to entertain you as richly as possible, always giving you as much extra as I can. I assume you are intelligent and will enlist your own imagination. You'll see that when you read the Dune excerpt and the other stories in this collection.

I don't have a problem with discussing the topic, I was merely suggesting that maybe this place isn't the best place for it. I know we sometimes get serious about issues and all that, but overall I feel this place is mostly light-hearted. And as you said, the thread is about tape transfers...

And are you saying that things would either stay the same or improve without armed police? IIRC, a town in Canada had a brief brush with anarchy several years/decades ago...and I can tell ya how that went for them.

Done driving this poor thread into a ditch at 90mph...if you'd like to discuss it further you can start a topic, assuming that's OK with the mods.

No topics are prohibited, let's just try to keep it somewhat civil and non-pornographic.

you should look into the Zapatista. too busy to add a wiki link myself this moment. they are awesome! it depends if you use the word anarchy to mean 'chaos' which it does not but is often used to mean, or if you mean the original intended definition, that is a society that doesn't have police because it doesn't need them; in practise that it is either a society based on mutual respect and love (not like this sietch then) or because everybody is in a mexican stand off and nobody is able to move aggressively toward another person without damaging themselves.
The Zapatista will kill only people who start telling them how to live their lives or taking the community land for personal gain. Most people in zapatista protected land are peaceful. Who are the zapatista? we all are. well, those of us with guns.

So....yeah.

Don't know much about transferring tapes to a computer, but I know that you can buy a turntable that will convert your records into mp3, m4a, etc.. I would imagine that they would probably make a tape deck that can do the same, but who knows what the cost would be like. SandRider's idea with the cables would sound like your best bet, if possible.

I think Inhuien is totally fine with knowing how to get the audio to disk, he was more concerned with maximizing the playback quality of the tape - as tape is a VERY finicky medium for recording.

Well, after an admittedly brief sit-down with Google, I found mostly hardware but also this:

http://www.dak.com/reviews/2020storyt.c ... DAodUmOJkw

It seems they claim that their software can remove a lot of the problems associated with tape transfers- pops, hiss, etc.

Supposedly it will make your finished result broadcast quality, but of course it would depend on the initial quality of the recording (i.e. you can't polish a turd). I don't know if it works or not, but the stuff is out there to find.

Audacity has a noise reduction tool.

Noise reduction is a good thing to have when copying from record or tape. I'm not sure what noise reduction plugins my programs have, as I never really would use them when recording... I'm sure they're in there though.

All the tapes are in effect 1st gen masters that were copied off at the the sames time as the final mix down and there was no Dolby noise reduction used, the tracks themselves all fairly loud punky tracks so signal to noise shouldn't be a hassle. Unless there has been a lot of dropout/degradation, which I hope not, the tapes have been stored in a constantly dry atmosphere so I'm hopeful. Thanks for the link smugetsu, however they're wanting cash that I can't give them.

I'm going to use the simplest route, line transfer to soundcard. I'll compare MS Soundrecorder and Audacity. Were he dead Albini would be spinning in his grave. :)

AToE or anyone got opinions regarding the output format, WAV vs FLAC, anyone got experience here.

I've never used (or heard of) FLAC, but WAV is totally acceptable as a pro format, it's pretty much industry standard. Does that progam let you choose sample rate and how many bits etc? If so, put the bit/audio sample size at 16 bit (that's as high as CDs go anyways, so any higher is useless) and the sample rate to 44kHz.

I like WAV, haven't ever had any compatability issues or sound quality loss.

WAV it is then, Free Lossless Audio Codex is a very fine format coming in at about 3/4 of CD audio file sizes.

I don't know if CDs stay in WAV, that could be - I do know that when I burn WAV files to CD the burner spends a second converting each file before copying, so I don't know what it's doing when it says it's converting.

Either way, WAV is standard, it's what recording programs (all the ones I know of anyways) use internally.
