The Music Suggestion Thread

Post by GamePlayer »

During a discussion of music in another thread, SwordMaster came up with an idea...
SwordMaster wrote:Yah music, we need a music thread maybe,
...so I figured best to create a dedicated thread so everyone can easily find it and add to it when they want.

Share some music with us, especially if you know some hidden gems or you can think of a song another member might like. Feel free to post videos or just audio files. Here we go :)

In fact I would love to hear some suggestions of songs to listen to from my fellow Jacurians.
Hmmm, not sure what you might like, but I'll go with something softer, melodic and definitely kick ass :)

So Here We Are (by Bloc Party)

Enjoy!

Thanks Gameplayer. I liked that one. Keep them coming. Tleszer I'll check out your's next. SydisticCynic had made a good suggestion also. I think his is still in the other thread though.

Here are a couple that I listen to a lot: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ntYdk62_QKs A small taste of New Orleans. (not a Christian song)

and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W12jw81OoeM Who says Christian music has to be boring?

Dead Can Dance is Lisa's band. I'm a fan of LG.
Therion is interesting. I haven't listened to much symphonic metal, but it's interesting.
Holst's planets is phenomenal. Mars is a personal favorite too.

Eyes High
I'm glad you liked it.

Since we're on the subject of Lisa Gerrard, here's one of my favorites featuring her amazing vocals.

Meltdown (by Lisa Gerrard and Peter Bourke)

Enjoy!

GP, what did you think of this "rendition" of Holst? It cracked me up.

I'm having a hard time getting into Venture Brothers. A friend burned three seasons for me and I'm watching them, but the comedy isn't really connecting. I find the humor a bit broad and despite all the sci-fi homages and references, I don't think it's working for me.

So yeah, that one video wasn't to my liking

Not bad. I had a friend growing up who was into DC Talk.

Sort of. David Byrne fascinates me, and Cross-eyed and Painless is a killer tune. Heads are like that with me, a handful of killer, top-notch tunes, most are just okay. I have total respect for this band, they were way ahead of their time.

Yeah, I got into them at first because of their Rhode Island origins. They have some good ones, and some mediocre.

Loved Mars Bringer of War when I heard it, been planning on getting that album.
My suggestion to Eyes High was Windowpane by Opeth; for some reason it sounded like something she would like. It is from the Damnation album which is all done in that style. The other eight are all metal albums mixed with that prog rock vibe.

So my subsequent suggestions are any Opeth and Cynic, my two favourite bands. Cynic have two albums: Focus and Traced In Air. Traced In Air is milder and less technical than Focus which is one of those albums that takes a few listens to get the feel of. I would suggest starting with Evolutionary Sleeper (from Traced In Air) or if you like heavier stuff then either Uroboric Forms or How Could I?.

Opeth's music is just phenomenal but my experience is that they are a love-hate band. I simply love them, they are like my Frank Herbert of the music world. A good start is The Drapery Falls. Simple but displays the general feel of Opeth's songs.
So: enjoy!

Yeah. I liked that one. Listening to Evolutionary Sleeper now. I think it would depend on the mood I'm in as to me listening to it. Thanks for the suggestions.

I'm going off the beaten path to recommend a few "hidden gems" from obscure sources or indie artists. I'm testing the waters here at Jacurutu, so please reply with your thoughts :)

Tank! (by Yoko Kanno - the theme for Cowboy Bebop, 1998)

Legacy (by The Gone Jackals - the theme for Full Throttle, 1995)

(for BB)
Almost Crimes (by Broken Social Scene)

What was that in the beginning of the video? A bikini contest? Did you consciously include this video just to test if members in this thread were following your links? ;) :)

Metric is not bad. Not crazy about them (they're a bit too pop for my tastes; I like their work better with Broken Social Scene), but a song or two is good. The video for Gimme Sympathy is awesome. It's all filmed in a single-take shot. You'd think it was done by Michel Gondry :)

But speaking of the Scene... (see above)

Hey, that's a good idea. No seriously, who ever put the video up got the tail end of the previous song on the tape. I think that was from his song "Surfing the U.S.S.R."

Okay, well I guess from the non-reply that didn't go over well. I'll stick to mainstream stuff then :)

The Fallen (by Franz Ferdinand, 2005)

Reptilia (by The Strokes, 2003)

A Pain That I'm Used To (by Depeche Mode, 2005)
