At the members online list it says things like Google[bot] etc. What are these (I gathered that they are bots)? and doesn't the 'type the distorted letters' obstacle block them?

I think Omph answered a similar question over at T(A)U. I jsut can't remember the exact explanation. Something like a tracking engine.

They're just programs that crawl the web (hence spiders ... seriously) and index the content of websites for use by search engines, etc.

That's it. Some of them archive content for later searches. Others are active searches by users of a few dozen different search engine. PHPbb3 assigns them an identity so they can be tracked and controlled, and assigns them to a usergroup so they can be corralled if that is desired.
