with the main criticisms being levelled at Anderson's literary ability, and the fact the story arc doesn't really justify such a long series

From several interviews, KJA states that they ended up writing more books than FH would have because they write the action and get to the point, while FH focused on the inner thoughts and philosophy of it all. But if they're getting to the "meat" of it, shouldn't they finish things much more quickly? Their logic is unrivaled.

Okay, you got me; that one made me snort a bit of Mountain Dew.

And now I've got a mental picture of Kevvie as one of those LOLcats going "pew! pew! pew!" as he sits at his keyboard ... or hikes with his manly recorder ... or whatever the hell it is that he does.

Oh, if you only knew what pyuu pyuu pyuu is onomatopoeic for in Japanese.

"Aa, aa, aa, Bekka!"

"Aaa! Aaaa! AAAA! KEBIN!!"

"Aaa! Iku! Iku! IKUUUUU!!!"

pyuu pyuu pyuu....

I got bored just by reading the overall synopsis. Too many parties (elementals) involved. Maybe the bad criticism to these books is due to bad covers art :P (Resurrection, Inc . The Stoker Award nomination thread by TheDukester)
Only the books written by Frank Herbert are canon.

By God, those books were on time, though!

Just look at the march of years inside those parentheses ... 2002! 2003! 2004! Not a single year skipped! Say what you will about KJA, but he delivers on time, brother.

+++++

Is anyone else just laughing at those summaries? And how Kevin thinks that just throwing a bunch of syllables together will make an SF-sounding name?

Chiggie, back me up here: it's always possible to tell when an author cares about language and how words sound and how they work together, right? I mean, on the surface, you'd think that terms such as "Bene Gesserit" or "Muad'Dib" or "Harkonnen" wouldn't work, but they do. They seem to fit.

But KJA's just making clicking noises into his little tape recorder. Hydrogues? Klikiss? Chairman Basil Wenceslas? It is to vomit.

Just another reason he's a complete hack.

Oh OH, they skipped a year! 2005. Maybe it was to make sure they did a good job on the sequels?

Oh wait, no. That was just to do Road to Dune. Never mind.

Hydroglodytes, Aerosols, Faeries, Metalzoids, Embroids, Soiledies and a Woody or two (I'm SURE). The "elemental" imagery is so heavy-handed you'd have to be totally ignorant of that classical system not to get it.

But I've always thought the Kikkass robots' name was ... kick-ass. :P

What is REALLY silly is his caste conventions for naming his Dildorian ... or ILewdrian? ... aliens.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Species_of ... 7#Ildirans
Socially, the Ildiran are separated into castes (kiths), according to their dominant genetic traits. They all differ grossly, some seeming to cross the species gap by being nearly reptilian, or nearly avian. But most, specifically the noble kith, are similar to baseline humans with a pale golden or gray skin. Each kith ends its name with a different phonetic sound and cross-breeds combine the sounds:

'h rulers/nobles
'n soldiers/warriors/guards
'nh military leaders/generals
'k workers
'v bureaucrats
't singers
'l lens kithmen
'f scientists
'o technicians
'of engineers
'a teachers
'th artists
'sh rememberers
'x miners
'c scalies
l swimmers
Scalies? I guess they ... scale things?

So basically he ripped off the Star Trek Xindi, who are themselves some of the most criticized aliens of the already criticized biology of the Star Trek universe. He could be going after the Moties, but I doubt he's that sophisticated.

Yeah, and I forgot to mention that Bobo "borrows" KJA's view of aliens for his own Mutatis.

Mmm....bodacious Mutatays! :D

These guys can't even get typical, alien-populated science-fiction right.

And you do love your Mutatays, Chig.

You see, it's because that lame Frank dude didn't pack quite so much meat as KJA does. That's why it's so much longer and thicker in volume. That's also why he has to take it out and shake something out at least every single year...otherwise, like he said, his head will explode.

And can someone explain to me this whole mutatays joke? I know they relate to similarly named aliens from Bobo's book(s), but what's the joke? What is the other meaning? :?

I see...kinda funny, but I guess I'd have to have the cultural connotations associated with native English speakers(or just north-american ones?) to fully get that. :(
