No, I mean, is it a sculpture? What is it made of?

It's like that image I posted on T(A)U today: it's a rendering (image output) of a 3D model/object that exists only as data in a file.

Feeeesh! What file formats does Sculptris use/export to/import from? :)

Sometimes I only have time to look at the pictures, sorry.

You can import/export .obj files. Not sure beyond that. It's pretty much a freeware version of zBrush (released by the same people). :)

I like it because I know very little about this 3d trickery and it's wonderfully spade-a-spade simple :)

Not bad. When I remake the movie I might consider you as concept artist. Although I would go a bit more of a Byzantine flavour. That was, after all, the intention of the author.

I don't think so. It's very creative and well done, but...

Leto was more of a "pre-worm" you could still see the sandtrout, at least there were places water could seep between the sandtrout. He did not yet have scales and was ribbed.

Not trying to rain on your parade, Dunefish.

No, not at all - you're right.

I was just trying to create something visually satisfying that hopefully doesn't stray too far from the canon in the important ways. Size (11m long, 2m diameter, face at man-height), plausibility of a facial blink (new version adds some segments around the face), somewhere for Siona, etc.. Trying not to fall into some of the other traps that make other versions not work.

:)

Seriously, I was at work. I'm working on a replacement fire alarm system for the Philadelphia Marriott Convention center, based on 1993 drawings... which were for a replacement system. The guys in the PA office haven't been much help, I've been working on it for months and it's due Friday, which is actually a month late, but that's their fault for not feeding me information on the existing conditions in a timely manner.

Very bad for my blood pressure.

That's a pain, but I was thinking that your comment above could be used in all kinds of situations. I might try to use it at work tomorrow!

If that helps :)

FH was an awesome writer who could spin together stories about concepts populated with real characters who say one thing and think another. But for the visual details (I know because I've tried to draw some of these things) he bluffs continuously. Not in a bad way - it's a testament to his supreme ability as a writer and one of the reasons his writing has the power to endure - that he can conjure up so much with a flash of black karakul hair :) At his best he builds a scene with a succession of pin-sharp hints.

The rare cases where he does include a fuller description are unfortunately less satisfying. I hope if they made a movie of Dune Messiah they wouldn't follow his plans for the Arrakeen Keep too literally. IIRC it's pretty much just a solid plascrete block which might have been bold in 1969, but thanks to changing times, wouldn't pack the same visual punch that it should. John "the only man who has ever visited Dune" Schoenherr plays it loose in places - using his imagery to convey the ideas rather than slavish replicas.

I've been thinking about Leto for years and if I still had them I'd scan some older drawings - they are almost certainly closer to what FH wrote, but they're also crap. :P A man-faced sock-penis struggles to convey any sense of Leto as the credible character FH wrote.

:)

Agreed, if that's what you want Leto to look like, so be it.

My comments were actually in response to SR's "cannonical" statement.

Ah, gotcha.

Will have to do a more canon version at some point too then :P

well, with all due respect to the sietch naib & Winnebago Driver,
as far as I'm concerned, that's what Leto looks like to me
from now on ....

I also really like the single reddish color, altho I'd like to see a completed version in total color ...

I'd also like to see this thing actually reproduced as an idol,
about a foot and a half long ... or maybe just the front quarter,
doubled and made into book ends ...

I would rather they stay true to his vision. Changing times, shmanging times. Something like that.
I bring nothing to the table.
