I'm just saying it's as bad as McDune books.

No, it isn't. As bad as it was, it isn't even CLOSE to as bad as the new books.HarryCanyon wrote:I'm just saying it's as bad as McDune books.
No, seriously, the Herbert Estate is a group of BAD PEOPLE. Some fans in Spain spent years making a fan film (they are an amateur film company, do great work) of Dune, which was never intended to make a single cent. The HLP sicked their lawyers on them and in the end they were so thoroughly scared that they tried their best to erase all records of the project from the net. They were told that even if someone else showed any part of the film again they'd be sued.Shaitan wrote:Yeah, seriously. I think that something purely community driven (not made by or centrally directed by any one person) and entirely noncommercial might manage to find a way to skirt the edge....maybe by going so far as to create mostly new characters within the OH Duniverse. But you're right, it would be damn tricky at best to avoid trouble. Odds are, whoever actually owned the site and hosted everything would have to be located in a safe haven overseas, willing from the outset to endure some BS threats from the usual legal eagles.Freakzilla wrote:Watch out for Herbert Estate lawyers...
That kinda goes without saying, once you see what they've done and continue to do to Dune.A Thing of Eternity wrote:No, seriously, the Herbert Estate is a group of BAD PEOPLE. ... Serious, bad human beings.
Definitely NOT, Harry. (...you're not for real, are you?)HarryCanyon wrote:I'm just saying it's as bad as McDune books.

(Maybe that's why you're putting things in people's butts lately? I'm just wondering if there's some sort of connection ...)
Or being hit by a truck eleven times.A Thing of Eternity wrote:They're both bad, to be sure, but saying the movie is the same or worse than McDune is like saying a slap in the face is worse than being hit by a truck.

Frank was pretty protective of his IP, but I think he also listened to folks if they said that their efforts were not for profit.gurensan wrote:I know this is an old as #@%& thread.A Thing of Eternity wrote:No, seriously, the Herbert Estate is a group of BAD PEOPLE. Herbert Estate Lawyers also completely killed Dune role play in Second Life, too. Sent out a whole shitload of C&D letters to Linden Labs (the company behind SL, blah blah) and they passed it on to the people running the RP groups. WTG... Lawyers: 9,000,000,000, Fans: -20.
I wonder how Frank would've felt about people RPing in the Duneverse. Would he have killed Last Unicorn Games or let them go ahead and release?
