Yeah, I don't see any similarities in most of that list.

Also elaborate on "Dune movies," please.

If you mean theatrical releases, there's been only one — singular. Do you mean the TV miniseries, too?

Avatar. 3D pretty otherwise meh.
The Fifth Element. Metal Hurlant live action.
Stargate. Kurt Russell needed another paycheck.
Star Wars Saga. There are only three films in the saga.
Flash Gordon. Queen rules.
Star Trek movies. Kaaaaaaaaahhhhhhnnnnnnnnnn!
The Black Hole. Bad drug trip.
Barbarella. Needs to be remade as a hard core porno.
Heavy Metal. Oh look! Animated titties! Jerk away boys!
Nausssica: Valley of the Winds. Captain Picard needed a paycheck.
Serenity. Oh look, another small petite girl demolishing everything!
The Matrix Series. Obvious that there were only plans for one movie.
Dark City. Most audiences missed the symbolism.
Metropolis (1927 and 2001). German fetish porn or animated robot cuteness?
2001. Still waiting.
2010. Still waiting.
The Dark Crystal. Freaky ass muppet horror movie.
Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Not enough dwarves.
Total Recall. Sharon Stone needed to reprise her bit from Basic Instinct, the three titty whore was a nice touch though.
Starship Troopers. Fascism is bad! BAD! Bad satire.
300. You have a thing for gay porn don't you?
Lightyears (Animated) yawn.
Fantastic Planet boring.

Neither do I. Well, perhaps some of the films mentioned share visual style or certain other elements with either Lynch's Dune or the miniseries, but that's it. Thematically, most of the stuff listed isn't even close to anything Dune IMAO.

Nausicaa: The Valley of the Wind is a animation movie directed and written by Hayao Miyazaki, a japonese, the master of animation. The plot is about a princess of a small peaceful country protected winds from poison pollens expelled by the Toxic Jungle that infectes their world. A war starts between the two most powerful nations, one a kingdom and other a fundamentalist nation. Nausicaa get into the war to protect her small country and all living beings, and because of a profecy and her actions, she starts to be respected and followed has a messias.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nausica%C3 ... _the_Wind_(film" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)

Nausissa: The valley of the wind started has a series of seven comic books written and drawed by Miyazaki, and years after became a movie. Both are beautyful and very well made. The similarities between Dune and Nausicaa are huge. Both shares many themes has ecology, warfare, politics, messianism. Both has a people how lives in the extreme conditions of the planeta, equal to Fremen (And make important part of the history). Both has giant worms, he. IMO, Nausicca is the unique work that has a strong influence of Dune and is in the same level. However, Nausicaa has more "heart" than "plot within plots" like in Dune. The force of Nausicaa is the carefully developed world, the draws and strong characters and their fellings.

I strong recommend this masterpiece of animation and science fiction.
The singular multiplicity of this universe draws my deepest attention. It is a thing of ultimate beauty.

For some reason I did not like Nausicaä - didn't even bother watching the entire thing. I enjoyed My Neighbour Totoro, Spirited Away and, to some extent, Howl's Moving Castle.

The "other" meaning is completely FUBAR :P

Back on topic, I do agree that in the various films listed in the OP, certain similarities with Dune can be found on different levels. For example, the Strangers from Dark City somewhat resemble Guildsmen as portrayed in David Lynch's film, and their conflict with the protagonist, who shares their powers and uses them against them, can be compared to the Navigator's animosity towards Paul who has their power of prescience.

thing is with a book as rich in archetypes and typicals as Dune, you probably could find parallels with just about any story ;)
I am not saying that to depreciate your post though, just saying that this fact itself is a tribute to the masterful storytelling involved here ;)

Actually, this thread made me think that with some effort, similarities can be found between any two or more things

Right, how could I have forgotten that one! But it rather lends towards a case of plagiarism, I mean inspiration, though, doesn't it?

I think it was Penny Arcade that said the difference between "plagiarism" and "a tribute to" is whether you like it or not.

How many true sci-fi fans have commited Seppuku because of all the horrifically bad D list made for tv movies?? Might be spontaneous laughing self to death syndrome too. As much as I would rather swallow a bucket of razor blades than watch Starship Troopers, I would take that over anything syfry makes.

Just bad bad bad bad bad... not even b film bad... just freaking KJA level bad!!
