Dune SE (1984) Extended Edition Prologue

Post by Freakzilla »

I just popped in my extended version and durring the prologue the narrator dates the time before the BJ when men were ruled by thinking machines, computers and robots at 6,041.

Anyone have any idea where that date comes from?

I noticed that as well on my last viewing, but never bothered bringing it up since I figured no one would care about what the Lynch version offered. Still interesting.

I can't make any sense at all out of 6,041. Not even as a CE/AD date.

:naughty:

;)

Yeah, that date doesn't even make sense in terms of Fukd'Dune chronology. As a pre-Jihad date, it would only make sense as B.G. That would give 11,000 - 6,041 = 4,959 years after Humankind ventures forth into "deep space".

If FH had anything to do with it, maybe he was drunk or whacked out on Mexican 'shrooms when he came up with it? ;)

I think KJA was an executive producer on the Lynch movie. I bet he got that date from Kevin.

No way, Keith hadn't even heard of Dune until he saw the movie.

I take it your meaning the Alan Smithee TV version, that things a cluster fuck of inattention.

Although the extra scenes are nice/funny/outrageous.

Actually, I made a mistake in calculating from Guild Prime instead of the Jihad dates, but that only makes it off by 201 years, which isn't a biggie when you're talking millennia.

Anyway, what I meant was that if the date is 6041 B.J. (=6242 B.G.), and the Jihad takes place "one hundred and ten centuries" after Humankind begins "mov[ing] through deep space", the the supposed subjugation of humankind by machines would take place 4,959 years after whenever that first journey through deep space takes place.

Not really worth considering of making much of. It's obviously something silly they threw in for that ridiculous prologue. :hand:

I think they threw in all of the raw footage for that extended edition. I think we've now seen one take from every shot they tried when they made that movie, and they even threw in the fucking pre-production sketches. I wouldn't be surprised if they just used a random number. Somewhere halfway between zero and 10,191. I mean 10,192.

Although, I have to say, they did give Gurney an awesome baliset solo in that deleted scene. I'm glad they still listen to 70's genero-rock ballads in 10,191. I mean, 10,192.

If I recall correctly there were factual errors in Irulan's voice-over prologue, too.

(I like that baliset clip, too. I think KJA must have seen it and got the idea that a baliset contains a spinning wheel from it. ;) )

(At least, I don't remember anything like that from the original books.)

I stayed in a town in Iceland named Hveragerði that was affectionately called Hurdy Gurdy.

There was no music though, just a tourist stop and people getting drunk.

I saw an "organ grinder" in Helen, GA once, who had a real monkey, but a boombox playing music
If there's anything I've learned from working with monkeys, it's that there is no problem which cannot be solved by flinging poo at it.
