Dune's first artist dead at 74

"[Frank] Herbert was so taken with [John] Schoenherr's images that he referred to the artist as "the only man who has ever visited Dune." "

Damnit, that's too bad. I know people have to die eventually, but I wish the ones I liked would stick around longer.

Goodbye John, you've always and will always be my favourite Dune artist.

I should have known you guys already knew about this sad news. I just read it over at Worm's and came over here to post it.

May he rest in peace. :tissue2:

I was a friend of John Schoenher; he showed me was a Suk Doctor looked like.

Didn't BH say in DoD that FH had bought quite a few of his Dune paintings? Does that mean that BH has them now? Because they just got a lot more valuable.

RIP John.

I don't think the author should make the reader do that much work - Kevin J. Anderson
We think we've updated 'Dune' for a modern readership without dumbing it down.- Brian Herbert
There’s an unwritten compact between you and the reader. If someone enters a bookstore and sets down hard earned money(energy) for your book, you owe that person some entertainment and as much more as you can give. - Frank Herbert

I saw a post over at DN recently where Byron said he has the painting that Schoenherr did of the battle where Paul defeated the Emperor hanging in his house.

This one:

I must admit I didn't know his name or was very familiar with his work, but you cannot like Dune and not recognize his illustrations when you're showed them

his worms are truly awe inspiring!

Sad news and fantastic artist, he will be missed.

I have the 1978 version of Illustrated Dune and love it.

Would love to have those paintings, hope they are well cared for.

DAMMIT. That painting is in the hands of the infidels you say?
This makes this ten times more tragic!
