Hmm... I was under the impression that the INS had tracked down the Cuban asshat. Must have set a new record swimming back!

(That's right, no-balls Anderson banned you. My bad!)

I'm surprised he let me in at all, especially signing up as Freakzilla.

Maybe he thought I was going to play nice.

I've never bothered trying to register to comment on KJA's blog. Why give the asshat an IP address to play with?

(Not that they couldn't figure out which accesses are mine... if they had a real webteam. ;) )

Ah, that reminds me: had anyone else noticed that in the Members list over on DN, Byron is no longer the "first among prequils"? There's a new admin in town, folks, and his/her name is....

So, as a new comer, I find it rather daunting to read all 59 pages of this thread.

Thus, simple question:

Last I heard the movie that was slotted for 2012, then 2014, then just abandoned. Is that true?

Yeah, last I heard Paramount dropped it.

It's all good, we like the sound of our own voices (or clacking of our own keyboards I guess...) so ask all you want!

Now, this is not related to the movie, but I've had this idea rattling around in my head for a while. Myself and my friend have been trying to figure this one out together. I'd love some feedback on the idea.

I work in theatre and I've had this idea to write a staged version of Dune. Perhaps from the eyes of the Fremen. This could allow us to have the setting entirely on Arrakis and not have to deal with giant space ships. While most of this is totally do-able in theatre, we have the issue of figuring out what to include, and what to cut out, even where to begin!

Everything in the first novel is so important. You need to understand Paul was trained in combat in order to care about his battle with Jamis. You need to know Gurney in order to be excited when they meet again in the desert. So and and so forth.

So, if you were to go to see a staged version of Dune, what would you expect to see? How should it be told? In fact, would you even go?

We want to do this so that people who know the story will be happy upon leaving the show, but so people who don't know the story at all will be able to be invested as well.

All opinions welcome.

One thing to watch out for is the HLP (the people who own the Dune rights, FH's family). A group in Spain did an amateur film of Dune that they worked on for years, was never intended to make a dime of profit or anything - the HLP sent their lawyers after them and made them not just stop and never release it or show it to anyone, they had to remove all traces of it's existance from the internet (basically).

They're seriously bad people. I don't know enough about the law to know if they could go after you too.

The plan would be to write it then see if the franchise would support it before we would go into production. I do not want a lawsuit, believe me. Thanks for the heads up.

Not to mention, the theatre that would be needed to house a production like this would need to be built. I do plan on, if we ever see this come to fruition, to have a 50 foot Maker come out of the orchestra pit and for the Fremen to ride it. The production would need to be operatic in scale in order to do it justice. But we wouldn't be able to do it without to support of the FH Franchise. I do not plan on doing anything without their backing.

Personally I'd avoid dealing with them at all if possible, but that wouldn't be too possible in a case like that!
Open with Paul against a gauzy background:

Child sings, "When I was a boy."
BLACKOUT

Older child sings, "When I was a boy."
BLACKOUT

Third, older child sings, "When I was a boy."
BLACKOUT

Concludes with a trio, all three ages.

CURTAIN UP

Song Ideas:

Duet with Jessica, "My Duke is dead."
Paul: "He is dead, my father is dead."

"Ride the Worm"

"Chani Beloved"

Duet with Baron and Piter:
Baron: "Why do they hate me?"
Piter: "Why do they hate you?"

Shaddam: "I am Shaddam, I am Emperor of the Universe."

Chani: "I love this man. Not a god, but a man."
Chani: "Carry me to ecstasy."

Paul: "Do not go there, Beloved! Into the future-"

(A matter of speed [in Time] to go faster into the Future)

Chani & Paul, duet, in oasis setting, moonlight
Paul: "Dunes-the dunes, the dunes as far as the eye can see."
Chani: "This lovely land. . ."

Hawat: "Keep me from evil. Deliver me from evil."

Paul: "We throw our reality onto the Universe like a net-and when the net fdalls, defining the shape within it-what happens when the shape fails to meet our expectations?"

Idaho: "A sword is a sword is a sword.
"A man is a man, etc.
"A boy is a boy, etc."
Halleck: "A mood is a mood, etc."
Hawat: "A mind is a mind, etc."

Paul: "Why was I born? I was born for this-born to rule."
Jessica: "Why was I born? Born to love."

Paul and Alia duet
Paul: "I am an old, old man. Many lives have I. This world, this dirt beneath my feet. What must I predict?"
Alia: "You look at me and see what is not. This child was never a child."

Battle scene, chorus: "We are Fremen."

Stilgar: "Dust falls upon me, beautiful dust. I have seen a worm, long as a ship of space, Old Man of the Desert."

Minor key lament:
"This cup of spice-it will carry me far.
I will abandon my flesh, live another's life, around another star.
Melange, they call it-melange, melange!"
Might work :)

Not a chance in hell.

The HLP is legendary for its desire to control anything even remotely touching upon Dune, no matter how small, off the wall, or under the radar it might be. They are also well-known for having their attorneys on speed-dial.

They are also useless parasites who will burn forever in a lake of fire, but that's a subject for a different thread.

Nice! The HLP won't let it happen, but here are some of my ideas...

Since you're planning on having it from the perspective of the Fremen, why not create your own sietch and some characters who hear about Muad'Dib and his fight against the Harkonnen. Open with an older Fremen in a meeting at Sietch Tabr with Stilgar and Duncan Idaho. This older Fremen would then talk to those of his own sietch, of which the new main character is a part of. It would be a great way for the audience to learn some necessary exposition as to why the Atreides are on Arrakis. It would also allow you to delve more into Fremen culture.

Also, maybe it would be a good idea to keep Paul's involvement cursory (a way to develop the myth of Muad'Dib) in the beginning. You can also use Paul's visions to help set up the overall conflict between Atreides/Fremen and the Harkonnens and Emperor. That problem with Paul's past with Gurney... if the main character becomes one of the Fedaykin, he will learn about Gurney from Paul himself before ever actually meeting him in the desert.

It's no news most likely. This thing seems determined to avoid ever actually happening.

Wait and see I guess.
