Well, anyway, it appears that "superartist" has moved beyond Navs for a while and is now working on more mundane Duniverse subjects:

hmm - in the same post as he goes on about refinement development and sketches.. that is actually quite an uninteresting take on the subject matter :P

Perhaps.

Bel Moulay has also picked up and commented on the KKK look.

superartist's reply is, as usual, unusual:
This sketch is just one from a pool of ideas that I took a little further and adapted it for Dune. It originated from sketches of ring wraiths. With Orange Catholic Bible in mind, the inspiration comes from the Spanish religious processions during the Holy Week of Easter. I am aware of the hood, but I am not worried about being politically correct. This is just about Dune.
So basically he's reworking old stuff (originally for LotR in this case?! Better than Star Wars, I guess. ) and calling it "Dune".

What the KKK priest has to do with the O.C.B. in Dune is beyond me.

I guess it takes an artiste.

Well, I suppose it can't be as bad as the Army of Pizza Chefs in the Dune Miniseries :P

Yeah, I have far less trouble with the priest than with the Navigator - as if religious leaders don't have a history of wearing funny hats.

Hell, I guess I can't get worked up about his Navigator, either - it's not a good translation of Herbert's work, but...mreh.

oh good christ.

this is for Merritt's Coloring Books of Dune series, right ?

have you really looked @ Massblack's art ?

do you have any original vision or talent ?

now, some people will say there's nothing wrong with comic book illustrations,
but I'm not one of them.

You are the Hanna Montana of the graphic arts ....

Don't be stupid - KJA said he'd be taking personal charge of the colouring book trilogy.

Hmm - this pic reminds me of some of the stuff in the DE.

Well, Simon, the colors are nice. :|

It's probably that "perspective" thing again, but it sometimes looks like the 'thopter is a smaller flying bug robot-thingy that the man's looking up at, much closer to him.

While the overall painting was a MASSIVE FAIL as a Dune (even McDune) book cover, I really like the 'thopter in Youll's "Jessica & Alia Incognito in the Suk". It looks, at least, like something that might fly with people in it.

Just wait until kja writes the novelization of the Official Dune Website and Message Board and turns him into a villain for even allowing one critical word of him.

Also, to get back on topic...

Who the fuck would ride in something like that? Was that supposed to be an April Fool's Joke?

Guys I wouldn't get to heavy here, the above illustration was intended for a childs book and as such I feel it fits the bill nicely. In that context I like the picture, It simple and the colouring is nice and bold.

Wow ... that was like, uncalled-for-level bitchy.

Actually, something about the cityscape reminds me of the Asahi Beer Building in Tokyo:

And yes, that thing on the roof is popularly known as "The Giant Unko (=Shit)".

That can't be real. No human being would make a sculpture like that for the roof of a building. It's not possible... :scared-eek:

Yeah. It was meant for children and was illustrated as such.

Is it perfect? Hell no. But keep in mind we hadn't done any final gloss work. As finished as it might look to the uninitiated, it was far from done.

I guess I could try to explain this or that, but who here really cares? I knew you guys would crucify us for having a hand in a Dune Children's book since we began. Simple fact is that I came to DN with my fan art hoping to grab some one's attention and work with the HLP on something Dune related. I would have done this for free (and I did as it turned out! lol) Everything went to plan. Not "exactly" per say, but meh, that's life.

I posted this (and other art) here because I know you guys are the harshest Dune critics on the web. (One of the things I learned during all of this was that just because fans don't tell you what you want to hear, doesn't mean it should be ignored.)

So take credit for the good things guys. Visually these pages, especially the later ones, were influenced by your harsh reviews of my art. My entire life all I get from people are "That's great!", with next to zero criticism. I need the occasional kick in the head to stay sharp. For that, you have my thanks.

Most especially I'd like to thank DuneFish and Freak, for always giving good solid constructive critique (seemingly unbiased) despite knowing that I embraced books they have such a strong distaste for. It was truly appreciated guys :)

Try saying that next time. Your description simply says it's your "take" on a thopter. I'm giving your martyr attempt a big fail.

I think children's books are great -- especially since I've got two myself -- so more power to you. I'd love to one day show my oldest son a decent children's book that goes over the very basics of Dune.

Constructive criticism: like a couple of others, the perspective seems off to me. And the picture needs more hats.

It is my take. I designed it (based on FH descriptions). It's a broad design of course, lacking the detail I normally give my images.

Martyrdom: If you say so.

Fancy Hats: Hasn't there been enough of that sort of thing? lol
