But what if we don't want to talk to you? :)
I've never used that feature at Sci-fi Haven. It might work well here, but I think we'd likely need a better version of the boards before we could have a feature like that.

I think the board posts we make here are goo enough. We don't instant chat messages to stimulate that we're really sitting down and hacing a conversation. 9Besides, Imagine how bad my spelling would be then)

The chat doesn't come with phpbb, you have to install it. Flashchat costs $5, which is what Worm has at Haven.

http://www.tufat.com/s_flash_chat_chatroom.htm You can click on the demos and try them out.

I had a quick cock about with a couple of free chat didgeridoos a while back. The best one I found was one called phpfreechat - it was a little bit temperamental at times, but really quite good and a piece of piss to set up once you got the hang of it.

It's actually still up and running - http://chat.dribble-sponge.co.uk/

funny thing is i always thought chat is a good idea untill recently.
i mean, ppl are so childish
(please note i' human also so that includes me in the ppl who are childish.i know it should be obvious but some ppl think by saying general (stupid)things you're throwing your fecus at others(saying you're not,but they are)

anyway ppl are so childish and it all ends up pretty retarded.
something like chatboxes on anime sites where 13year olds meet.
besides i'm tired of ppl twitching on m yenglish.
m'not a native English and i think it's retarded to write capital letters where there should be none in my mother tongue.
you don't like it?
sue me.

one more thing i like typos.
yeah.
bad english is okay too.
why?
cause you should be able to know what the little Talian girl is trying to say, specialy if you're a native English speaker.
But of course we should just insult each other.
That's what internet is for.
You know her English writting would improve with time but nooo
she got a ban(man, is it retarded or what?)

anyhow, i vote against chat and against oil.
i'm a pedestrian.
i walk.
so should you
:P

I'm not walking 110 miles a day, it's a pain to even drive that far.

You really missed out. SC joined a satanic cult, started wearing pink and recently revealed his sex change with a rather ostentatious display of 18th century female fashion :)

I've seen his pic. Seeing his sex-changed pic is something I'll actively avoid seeing though.

Another site I visit has added an IRC widget and it works great. You don't host it on your server, so it won't slow your site down..and it's free. You can access it through mibbit, any IRC client, or through the widget.

That might be worth looking into ... let's face it, a lot of what is being posted here lately is just people chatting back and forth at each other. That could easily be done in a separate window or something.

The cool thing about the widget is it can be placed in a locked thread of its own, all you have to do is open the thread, sign in, and it connects to the chat. IRC is kinda old, but it works. Just have to make sure you have a few ops in different time zones to kick out the spammers who sometimes show up.

mirc gives me a headache.

after installing it , i accidently pushed something and was swarmed with millions of data.
i got scared, and run away.

i was going there to download some anime&manga....
in the end i didn't get anything.

what do you use it for, if i may ask(since we don't know each other well, or at leas i don't remember you from dod, arrakeen or ghola.maybe you used a different nick..)

No, you don't know me from IRC. The only nicks I have there are recent. There are other better clients than mIRC for Windows. Chatzilla, and X-Chat 2 are both free I think. You don't have to download anything to use Mibbit, just create an acct, enter the server and channel and connect. The chat will open in it's own window or tab, cause it's browser based.

it's silly realy the way i just mess up sometimes while using software.
i shouldn't be drinking coffee&looking at my uni notes&listening to music while installing software and using it for the first time.

That one looks ok actually :) but most of the free hosted ones are crap though.

They're really unreliable and/or not site specific. We had quite a good one on the RPG I used to play... but every ten minutes (even during IC events) you'd get some idiot popping in and asking "What's a Selamlik?" or something inane. Guess that wouldn't be much of a problem here though :P

IMHO hosting your own is the way forward - you can put a link straight from the main index page of the forum. The one I posted earlier ( http://www.phpfreechat.net/ | http://chat.dribble-sponge.co.uk/ ) is pretty lightweight, site specific and not run by off-site arseholes :x ...

Pro chat though
