My wife is going out of town this weekend so I'll have nothing to do but get drunk and screw up the forum.

Oh, yeah, and beat the kids... got to remember to do that.

No matter how much they resist, I am trying not to raise a bunch of rednecks.

(no offense to any motorcross fans out there)

I guess this time is as good as any other to ask, do you know where the word "redneck" comes from? I saw the documentary which explained the origins and remember a bit of it.

I always assumed it was from farmers getting their necks sunburned while working in the fields.

"Redneck" is a proudful nickname given to union coal miners in Virginia.
A while back in Virginia, coal mines in all counties became unionized except for one county (forgot which one). The newly unionized coal miners marched to the non-union county, to identify each other the miners wore a red bandana around their neck. That's it.

Possible Scots-Irish etymologies

The National Covenant and The Solemn League and Covenant (a.k.a. Covenanters) signed documents stating that Scotland desired a Presbyterian Church government, and rejected the Church of England as their official church (no Anglican congregation was ever accepted as the official church in Scotland). What the Covenanters rejected was episcopacy — rule by bishops — the preferred form of church government in England. Many of the Covenanters signed these documents using their own blood, and many in the movement began wearing red pieces of cloth around their neck to signify their position to the public. They were referred to as rednecks.[1] Large numbers of these Scottish Presbyterians migrated from their lowland Scottish home to Ulster (the northern province of Ireland) and soon settled in considerable numbers in North America throughout the 18th century. Some emigrated directly from Scotland to the American colonies in the late 18th and early 19th-centuries as a result of the Lowland Clearances. This etymological theory holds that since many Scots-Irish Americans and Scottish Americans who settled in Appalachia and the South were Presbyterian, the term was bestowed upon them and their descendants.

edit to add
well now we better have a redneck smiley as well :)

Aye that's the truth of it, Hillbillies as well. Scottish protestants who supported William of Orange were known as Billies hill boys.

Hypatia will not be offering any smileys to this forum. However, she does know of a handy website where you can make your own, in lots of different colors, round or square, with a very nice assortment of expressions.

Not unless you mean the error message at DN today. I found that mildly amusing.

Ah, no.

Pending an IP check, this thread could be Jacurutu hall of fame material. But I fear the worst.

Well, since that reference is clear as mud, I'll just not worry about it...

I see your $3 bills don't seem to be a problem here.

I have a few suggestions where you can load your smileys, though.

(Don't bother replying or PMing me, I won't bother reading anything else from you.)

Hmm, well, personally, although a bit influenced by certain company around these parts, I never had any quarrel with Hyp, apart from that retarded "zomg iz pr0n?!" bit over at Worm's(which does piss me off though, having been looked at like I was using porn to slander someone in a PG13 board...thanks for uptight Wormy for not seeing how stupid such a mistake like Hyp's is...didn't anyone ever bloody read GEoD over there :? ).

Hanmya means some sort of female demon, probably from Japanese mythology. That's it.
I'm not to blame if some porn related persons/sites thought it might be a good name.

Oh, and don't bloody use Yahoo. Geez, who uses Yahoo nowdays?
In memory of Perach, who suffered and died needlessly.

I wish I could have been with you that one last time.

Relax. It's okay. We're here to help you. Is Hypatia there? Deep breath. Can we talk to her today? Does she really know a place where they make things with pretty colors and even in round or square shapes?

So Hypatia, why are you on strike? Is that a reference to Arrakeen being on strike?

It's just the first small avatar I grabbed from my collection. The smiley artist who made it did so in response to the Screen Writers' Guild strike earlier this season.

I suppose I could change it if people don't like it...
