Chapter listings for reading groups?

Postby SandChigger » 12 Feb 2008 00:26

Freak, do you have a list of chapters for each book?

On the concordance wiki, I started setting up something of the sort for use in listing page numbers across different editions. A numbered list with the title (when given) or the first three or four words of the chapter epigraph is what I have in mind.

If you don't have something like this already, how about a few of us divvy up the books and do it?

I don't like every writer's style; for instance, I have never been able to get through Ursula LeGuin, China Mieville, or Iain Banks, all of whom are critical darlings. —KJA

No, that's why I was posting the epigraphs for each.

Might want to settle on an edition though, some have prologues and some don't.

That is not going to work too well. People bought these books sometimes decades ago and have hung on to them. Pagination is all different between the editions now. Maybe we could list the big four or five?

Ch 34 God created Arrakis to
Ch 35 The concept of progress
Ch 36 Muad'Dib tells us
Ch 37 The hands move, the lips move

Book III - The Prophet

Ch 38 No woman, no man, no child ever
Ch 39 Deep in the human unconsciousness
Ch 40 There is in all things a pattern

Ch 43 When law and duty are one, united
Ch 44 How often it is that the angry man

Would y'all consider the "Death Cell Interview with Bronso of Ix" in DM to be a prologue or Chapter 1?

Prologue. Makes it easier because, IIRC, that is not in the UK edition. Or maybe its the early American edition its not in. Hmmmmm.

Would anyone be willing to go through the reading group summaries and make sure the chapters are numbered correctly?

I started copying CH:D from T(A)U and found that I had skipped chapters two and three and all the following chapters were missnumbered.

Thanks

Not sure what you are asking here, Freak. Are you asking someone to make sure that the chapter numbers you have assigned to CH:D are correct? They may be off in your list? Or all books?

All of them need to be checked. I haven't noticed any errors in the other book but it would be good to make sure.

What did Frank have against chapter numbers? :x

I'd like to use 'Chigger's idea for a chapter index sticky for each book but I've got to be sure their correct.

Maybe we can get a few more to volunteer to do one book each?

I never rechecked my list above, sorry.

I prepared it by going through a New English Library paperback copy and jotting down each section (chapter) beginning with an epigraph.

I might try to do some of the other books this week, if no one else gets froggy....
