Fighting Bots

Post by lotek »

I'm an admin on a forum that's been riddled with bots, how do you keep them at bay over here?
We used to have a basic captcha thingy but recently they keep coming back, even with the extra step of mail activation.

Not sure about all the technical parts as I deal mainly with moderation and such, but I can ask the guy who does that any specifics you might need to answer.

Cheers guys!

We get them, I'm usually quick to delete them though.

Alright, I thought it was just us.

They've been coming in waves and hand delete can be a tedious process though but if it's the only way...

The Captchca system we have is awesome. It is a mod, not the one that came with the board. Cant remember what its called, but we use pictures of cats that seem to confuse a ton of bots. I think the spammers we do get are real humans setting up identities for later.

Before we added the new system we would get hit constantly by spammers. Since we added it, virtually nothing.

Ragabash can tell you what the system is. I'd recommend sending him a PM.

Cutest captcha ever! I could do it all day.

As for fighting bots, you could always call KJA and see if you can borrow Norma Cenva.

Thanks Omph', I'll do that.

And JasonJD48, we both know the only way to kill a bot is by becoming a one shot human EMP weapon. Or merging with them and a worm. Or becoming an Elohim.

If you leave them alone long enough, they become a weird old married couple pruning roses and begin to think they are face dancers for some reason.

Or the odd pairing of a disgruntled son and a failed critical darling, who think themselves Franks for some reason ^^

I like this comparison of the prequels with bots using a random-text generator using Dune terminology.

I picture them like the South Park parody of Family Guy writers.

We were going to change the photos from cats to characters and vehicles from the various Dune films, but never got around to doing the work.

Oh, I must have made a typo when looking for his profile here, so I went to the other place.
