preventing useless new threads from the untested

thanks to Askaris for pointing me in the right direction

http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopi ... &t=2100180" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

so it seems you need to create groups with differents rights and access, and then just edit those
So we could have
- newcomers
- sietch tested members
- mods and admins

Nothing too elitist there, I must say that for the sake of lisibility dumb topics should not be allowed.
After all, if we take the dumb too, what's left to byron to play with ?

Coulda sworn I posted about this last night.

The new version of the board allows you to create Newbie threads. New folks can only post in a new member thread for a preset number of posts. Ragabash and I are planning on when we can make the time to upgrade T(A)U and Jacurutu. Shouldn't be too much longer.

You did, 'cause I saw it.

One of my comments ended up in the wrong thread, too. (I hit quote and whittled it down, no copying of content to an edit window in a different thread.) Board glitch?

Anyway, I'm still against this corralling of newcomers. It's not that big a problem. If "thread litter" is seen as undesirable, make a new "bad examples"-type area/forum and move the offending threads there, with a new announcement thread to keep a record of such actions, for transparency.

I guess I'm not seeing the plus side yet.

Me either, what's such a big deal that we want to limit the ability to start threads? Lots of people show up here with questions, and generally the thing to do is to start a new thread to ask those questions.

Yeah, I don't understand why this is necessary, either. It seems like a weird restriction to put on things. This might be because I enjoy crazy talk and even shishi, but I also think AToE makes a good point ^^^ about new people showing up to ask questions.

that's a good point; I never thought of that...
But if you need help in tidying the forum I've got some moderation/admin experience :)

Oooh, SCARY.

Well, as for moddy and "tidying-up", I guess I'm just basically against deleting anything except outright spam and stuff that's truly & unnecessarily & intentionally offensive...

But that's just me. ;)

You can't do that, SandRider would be down to about 3 posts. :D

fwiw, I say keep things as they are.

Shishi was on of the great thinkers, with secret knowledge of conspiracies and secret Kubrickian subliminality.

Shishi's posts blew me away.

Made me want to squat down and pee.

Don't think about that one too much...

I am 100% opposed to deleting any posts at all ... y'all know this ...

now - how long does it take to determine that a new recruit is a shitheel,
with little to contribute ... more than four or five posts ?

how long does it take to determine that a new recruit is an intelligent adult,
has read Frank and is appalled by what has done to his work ?

usually the first post ...

now, I'm not going to say this again, it's 7:30am and the wind turned around out of the north about 4:30 and is blowing
forty-fucking-five miles-a-fucking-hour, and it's 50 out there with a windchill of 35 and will drop all day to a low tonight
in the lower 20s and the humidity and dew point are way up and there WILL BE a killing freeze in the valley tonight and
I WILL lose the rest of my tomato plants and my house is full of shitheel sons and and two bitchy wives and a girlfriend,
(you remember her, the stripper? hot little thang, too, I may get drunk and try to fuck her and then remember my penis
is fucking broke and go on a killing spree ..) and right now, even the granddaughters are pissing me the fuck off .... so:

I do not approve of the board control measures Omphalos has described; if this is the only option, I will be against
any change in procedure at all ....

I believe everyone who finds this sietch should be able to register automatically and post their ass off ...
I'm talking about starting threads ... not only is there the recent example of HairyC, which is one reason,
asshats starting thread after thread after after of STUPID BULLSHIT, there is also the too common problem
of a new recruit starting another thread on a topic that most likely already has 2 important & content-rich threads
and a dozen more of bullshit ...

this is bad for several reasons :

1) obvious - spreads out the discussion on the topic all over the place; leads to duplicate statements of opinion -
how many times in how many different threads have some of you given an opinion on Lynch84 ?

2) related - I like these huge, on-going threads on this board - it keeps things in one place, and is a quick read
for the new recruit to get up to speed - and is great re-reading ... Twitter Wars, Posts I think will/Posts I think should,
Us vs. Them, the Halloween Thread ... &etc. I want to encourage this ...

3) related to the new recruit getting up to speed - when some shitheel starts a thread about say, Lynch84,
I'm going to assume they COULD NOT BE FUCKING BOTHERED TO READ THRU THE BOARD, just a little
fucking bit,but had to rush out and start a new thread to tell US what THEY think ....and kiddies, right there,
right then and there, I decide I do not give a damn what this person has to say ...

the only fair solution I see to this is a "may start thread" setting, activated manually by the admins;
but also, there has to be a way to allow a new recruit to start an Intro thread - it may be necessary
to remove the Intro thread to a forum of its own ...

I am saying that everyone has the right to post, anywhere, anytime, as much as they like ...
I am saying that starting threads, if we are going to stick to the "no deletions, ever" policy,
is not an automatic right, because it affects the structure of the board ...

and I am saying that the admins will have to make that judgment call, when to click the
"may start thread" button ... and Omph, I'd say use the same criteria and judgment you
do when you allow people into T(A)U ... think about it - would you let HairyC into T(A)U ?
it's not a closed board, he can read it all day long if he chooses - but would you let
him post there ? same principle here - HairyC is more than welcome to post in existing
threads, but I donot want the wingnut starting threads ...

now, all that said, let it be known that I agree with Chig & Thing - this is not that big of a deal;
it's just a minor annoyance - that keeps occurring ...

now, if y'all will excuse me, Imma go downstairs and start beating my children in the head with a hammer ...

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone !!

Let's see, when you're not logged in, the board tells you:
FORUM PERMISSIONS
You cannot post new topics in this forum
You cannot reply to topics in this forum
You cannot edit your posts in this forum
You cannot delete your posts in this forum
You cannot post attachments in this forum
That makes me think there may be one or two (or more) separate privilege settings controlling those actions. Omph, Freak or Ragabash will have to look at the admin controls and confirm this, but isn't there a setting for determining which group all new registrants go into?

So set up a "newbie" group and give that group permissions to start new threads ONLY in the Introduce Yourself forum, and to post replies to existing threads in any other forum. That way they can introduce themselves and ask questions and beginning participating in ongoing discussions right away.

If the boardware allows it, that seems a fair compromise, no? ;)
