Hey there! Big Dune fan here who just found out about these forums. Though I've loved the Dune Novels for a good long time, I've been more involved in Star Wars fandom until just recently, when I've been trying to organize a free form, forum RPG all about DUNE. I can't wait to get more involved in Dune fandom.

It's not a sock, I swear.

The first time I signed up, the damn board never sent my confirmation email, or I never received it, or my junkmail filter blocked it, or something, such that I couldn't get into the board using my original choice of username and email. Bastards.

But I forgave and tried again, to great success! As for "EsperandoAGodot"....I'm Latino, and a theater major...and enough of a dork to make a Beckett reference.

Easy cursing the board - it has delicate feelings, and cries when hurt.

I'm a real generous guy, and it doesn't matter to me who or what you are. Here, you are judged on the content of your character (and posts), not the color of your username.

And if you were trying to hide out just because someone started a "Wisdom of BobaMatt" thread to ridicule your posts Over There, you wouldn't have started out by posting the exact same things. No explanations needed, as far as I'm concerned. Come on in and do what you want. This is Amerika, and this is a Free, Deletion-proof board.

However, if it turns out I still don't like you, I will post horrible, rude things. You, of course, are free to do the same. Everybody wins !

oh yeah:

Aw, it's one of them sensitive boards.

Just thought I'd explain, as issues of identity get all kuh-razy on the net, so I wanted to make it clear I wasn't socking or trying to be decepting; if I could have had my old username, I would have.

That being said, I'm also a fourteen year old girl.

no, it's not an "inside joke", you posted something I found amusingly stupid Over There, and, expecting you to continue to produce such gems, started a thread here called "The Wisdom of BobaMatt" .... I'll like you much, much more if you do pretend to be a 14yo. As long as I get pictures, I'm never concerned about the Truth.

Hm...never saw that thread. I'm curious to know what you thought was stupid, though. I hope it wasn't the RPG pimping, which I frankly find to be about as offensive as the rampant fanart threads.

Maybe in the Star Wars comic books. Not in Dune. But this isn't even an
argument around here : Kevin's trash is not canon, nor is it even Dune. It
is an unforunate trademark/legal mistake by the HLP that history will correct.

Plus, there's only five people that post Over There, and I was looking for
someone to ridicule. You got caught in the net, fairly or not.

You also have to take into account who I was talking to: I was trying to make sure a thread that the boardadmin would likely find controversial fly without argument. That being said, I still - to some extent - hold to that thought, as, well, if FH ever wrote an inconsistency into his books, we'd probably retcon it.

The problem comes when something is so egregious and inconsistent that the previous, better book takes precedence. I stopped reading House Atreides when I got to the robotic shuttle.

Anyway, my larger point is that we can either be militant about it, or we can say, "Alright, they're asking me to accept this as canon. Now...how the fuck do we go about doing that?" while still kind of not caring about KjA's "work." As it's fiction, and not history, it lends itself particularly well to being approached from a number of angles without affecting how you actually feel about things.

FH did make changes/retcons/mistakes.

You are right in what you say, but I disagree on the point that we should give ourselves the task of validating and legitimising KJA's long list of cock-ups and his blatent disregard for the source material.

I mean that it might be worth giving a try to, even as a merely academic exercise. It sucks and it's awful, but the estate is telling us it's canon. While we're rejecting it, it may also be interesting to see what happens if we try to make it work together - I don't see the two standpoints as being mutually exclusive because, again, it's fiction.

SandRider poos on Star Wars, but my interest in this sort of approach can also be said to come from my English major at a liberal arts college, where I'm often asked to approach texts from points of view I don't necessarily agree with.

I meant it as a casual exercise in fannishness and literary delving, not meant to offend anyone's sensibilities. Oh well.

Count me out as well. Reading the atrocities made me vomit plenty already, no need for any more of that trying to "fit it in"with the originals. There is no more canon then the originals. Period.

::shrug::

Is it the idea of approaching an unpopular text that's anathema to people here, the idea that you can do so without actually legitimizing the text, or is it just the prejudice against KJA and BH? I think the books are bullshit and agree with everything Penny-Arcade had to say about them, too, guys, but, hey, I don't have to agree with feminist critiques of Beowulf to try and read the book that way. Honestly, when I made the suggestion, I never thought it would generate such controversy, as I don't think there's anything objectively stupid about it.

I'll shut up about it, then, though...thanks for the welcome!

Don't shut up about anything. I'm not going to keep saying this.
This is a Free Board, if you have an opinion, voice it.

But (and I'll not keep saying this, either) this isn't Star Wars.
You cannot rape & befoul what was already trash.
You continue to equate your experiance with Star Wars with your
experiance with Dune. This makes you intellectually suspect, in my mind.

You are saying that Kevin re-wrote the Star Wars story, too, so it's
okay if he re-writes Dune. That if I don't like it, it's just a story.

I violently disagree.

You've obviously read & thought alot about Dune. But you've brought
a Star Wars mentality to the table; pearls before swine, as it were.

I'm not saying it's okay. I'd rather the new Dune books were never written, or if they had, that they'd been handled by someone with a better understanding of the universe. I'm also not suggesting anyone accept them as canon, as I don't, and don't expect anyone interested in entertaining this whim of mine to, either.

What I'm positing is that, since we're being asked to accept the damn books as canon, it might prove amusing - say, during a bout of insomnia or procrastination - to try and figure out why the fuck the Guild would have robotic shuttles after the Butlerian Jihad.

Their claims that it is canon are not interesting, or relevant.

And just because two books are fiction does not mean that they are necessarily compatible - myself and others have offered several examples of points which actually prove that the KJA and FH books cannot, taken on face value, be part of the same universe.

What interest does it hold to try and fit Frank's ideas about machine-thinking with the Skynet scenario?
