Getting into Dune again after many years away. Read the book when I was 13, completely spellbound. My teachers were insistent that I put the book down, go outside and 'play'. But I had to sneak back in and spend a little more of my lunchtime on the sands of Arrakis. Still awaiting a completely decent visual adaptation. Something for HBO to tackle one day?

I'm British, I live in Saudi Arabia. I can speak and read a small amount of Arabic. I study groundwater for a living. Paleowater that fell as rain thousands of years ago.

I like the epigraph! I can't read all of it, but there's sufficient overlap between the two languages for me to see a handful of words that I recognise even though the amount of vocabulary I've memorised is pretty meagre.

I used to hide books under my desk at school so I could read during class.
Of course, Sci Fi the choice of choices (Jack Vance, PK Dick, Asimov and all the others)
I have a soft spot for Lynch's Dune visuals (and the pug dog charging into battle), but the tv series, although the effort was commendable and they seemed to follow the story better, didn't quite hit the mark visually imo.

Welcome! I havent been to Saudi Arabia, but ive been to Dubai a few times. Wasnt the greatest experience. Except the ridiculous mall with a huge slope to Ski down was amazing. Your job sounds really interesting, and I would also be interested in hearing about it in layman's!

Thanks for the welcome everyone! There's a limited amount I can tell you about what I do as most of the information is restricted, but I tend to do more computer modelling than in-situ work. There are some good public domain resources on Arabian aquifers out there on the web for anyone who wants to get a good overview.

The Nabataeans were expert hydraulic engineers, and their skills in constructing wells, cisterns, runnels and aqueducts enabled them to develop advanced agriculture and practice soil conservation. At Petra, however, there are no Nabataean wells: Water from springs and channeled runoff fed more than 200 rock-carved cisterns. By contrast, at Mada’in Salih there is no evidence of surface springs; the Nabataeans here depended on more than 130 wells and channeled their sporadic rainfall into cisterns cut into the sandstone.
