Just more BAD SCIENCE...

Post by SandChigger »

I noticed last night that TAnthony over on Wikipedia had added Ipyr to the list of Dune planets:
Ipyr

In Paul of Dune, Ipyr is the homeworld of Earl Memnon Thorvald, a noblemen who leads the resistance against the rule of Paul "Muad'Dib" Atreides after the events of Dune.[16] When Paul discovers Thorvald's intent to devastate the Atreides planet of Caladan, he forces the Spacing Guild to eject Thorvald and his followers into deep space and leave them to die.[16] Paul's forces then "sterilize" Ipyr, using "weapons, explosives, highly toxic chemical bombs, defoliants, and wide-dispersal incendiaries" to destroy every living thing and render the planet uninhabitable.[16]

Footnote 16: Herbert, Brian; Kevin J. Anderson (2007). Paul of Dune, pg. 468-469.
Supposedly the sterilization bombing lasted "thirty-three standard hours".

I think we've pointed this out before, but why waste all those munitions Why not, instead, just spend that time towing a sufficiently large asteroid into a collision course and letting it do all the work? Then use bombs and whatever to wipe out any survivors.

I guess that wouldn't seem brave enough or active enough? Not enough weapons special effects potential in the movie version?

It's just stupid and pointless....

(On the talk page, I left TAnthony this note:
Forgot something in the list of weapons used on the planet:

As yet unsold copies of Hunters and Sandworms were dropped on many cities before the employ of more conventional bombs.
;) )

The jihad is very good for the economy, expecially defense contractors like House Haliburton, from the first moon of IX. You wouldnt want to screw that up, would you?

To be fair, couldn't the HM have done the same thing, tow a giant asteroid and smash it into arrakis instead of using the so-called Obliterators to do the job?

My reasoning would be that the HM didn't have time to go out and look for an asteroid, but rather the HMswere too much in a rush to kill Duncan (IIRC).

The obliterators were probably quciker and cheaper. Chig is talking about WWII style carpte bombing. Imagine how expensive and time consuming that would be on a planetary scale.

Because on the Internet everyone is entitled to kindness and fairness without the fear of ridicule, disembowelment, or defenestration.

I don't think Bubba would appreciate such a sentiment, Chig. That is, of course, unless you mean Jailhouse Bubba because he might be into that sort of thing.

Sloey's best response ever.

I used asteroid death in my first Star Wars fanfic. A star destroyer used tractor beams to create a fake asteroid shower to smash up a ship full of Jedi.

I've always considered that perhaps Frank was considering the Worms of Arrakis as an incredible weapon. Just think, drop enough sandtrout on a planet and in 50 years its a desert husk (old Shai-hulud, not Leto-worms)

Sure it isn't instant but think, most people that didn't know what the worms were would waste tons of energy and resources trying to halt its progress to no avail. They just watch their planet turn hostile. You don't even have to destroy their resources, as with the spice, Worms will make it damn hard to do. De-terraforming!

I used this strategy in Spore to great success. instead of wasting tons of money on bombs and laser tech, i upped my terraforming abilities and just nuked them with heat or ice and watched their tech and production levels plummet. Naturally, this pissed them the hell off. Doing this to their capital planet was amazingly evil (and effective)

(Note: In spore hostile environment planets can only support one city whereas with terraforming they can support up to 3 (7 if a capital))

Sorry. I was posting from an alternate dimension filled with talking mice and Ewoks. In the real world the only acceptable use for the internet is to locate idiots for later defenestration.

I would have posted this earlier, but the Ewoks were scaring me with their kindness and love of bigfoot.

Well, I didn't want to be the one to bring up pornography but if you insist...

I think someone was watching the Braveheart directors commentary (which sucks overall, but was hilarious just to learn the word "defenestration") :)

I haven't seen that commentary, but I may have to because of GP's ringing endorsement. :)

Brian Michael Bendis got a whole issue out of that word a few years ago in the Powers comic book. It was pretty funny.

Ah, nostalgia....

Fenestra was one of the first Latin words I learned. ;)

(And, no, the Romans didn't use the word.)
