House Atreides Concerns

Post by aethereon »

I just finished listening to House Atreides (technical second complete read).

While it's fresh in memory - I have a few questions:

Firstly (most important), the Harkonnens scored this super secret no-field tech from a Richesian engineer, right? The engineer explained an adjustment to holtzman fields that allowed the nullentropy effect.

Rabban used a small vessel contained within a no-field to frame the Atreides and smoke some Tleilaxu vessels. Before Rabban did this, it was explicitly explained that a holtzman field (shields, in the particular case) interferes with the foldspace engines, and even disrupts the navigator's prescient trance. HOW CAN I BE TOLD IN DETAIL HOW HOLTZMAN FIELDS DISRUPT ONE ANOTHER IN ONE BREATH, AND YET ONE REMAINS UNDETECTABLE IN ANOTHER?

Secondly, why didn't the Harkonnens use this badass super-tech to smoke Caladan (or even Katain) directly, undetected? As overcomplicated as things in these prequels tend to be without justification of self-sustained substance - its no surprise.

Finally, and not that it matters an iota, with deep respect to the nullentropy tech at Harkonnen hands before Paul was even born, how were the events of the original Dune even possible? How can the Harkonnens be formidable at all at this point, with tech that trumps ALL?

Other immediate concerns appear to have been addressed by others.

Welcome to the sorry, suck-ass world of McDune - where no plot device is too lame as long as it's PEWPEWPEW Kewl gunsgunsguns, because when you're writing 'canon' you can do whatever the fuck you like - and they do, to our eternal misey. The DN FAQ explanation of all this was one of the sorriest excuses for making shit up that I've ever read.
Freakzilla - "Apparently we can only aspire to be the 13th biggest Dune fan since we are not family or in the HLP."

Byron - "Are you trying to irk me?"

Do you really want these questions answered or are you just venting?

Because they(them!, those 2, the terrible twins) never think beyond the next word. They also tend to forget the last page they typewritered/dictaphoned.

The Baron's ST-Disease must have affected his braincells. Couldn't figure out how to use it.

The Harkonnens as portrayed in the prequels are a bunch of crazy savage dummies. They probably forgot all about it.

Summary; it never happened.

Well, I'm rather attached to my sanity, such as it is, so how about changing that to

"Abandon all expectations of sanity in these books, ye who..."? ;)
