My heartfelt thanks to Bobo and the Hack

Post by rain_maker »

I just returned home from the book store with the Foundation Series and Enders Game. I would not have thought to even look for these books had it not been for the Hack and Bobos terrible "writing" ultimately leading me to this forum, where good science fiction has been discussed and compared endlessly.

I then got to thinking: what other good has actually come from McDune. There is a whole lot of bad, but what good has come to your life because of the "other books with Dune on the cover".
I had no idea that there were this many Frank Herbert fans left alive, what with the head exploding horror that is the KJA/BH atrocity.

The hack named Iain M. Banks a "critical darling", and I thank him for that. Because of the Hack's jealous nature I found a great writer!

Not yet, but it is on my "to buy and read" list.

I actually got to throw a book across a room (Sadworms) in disgust. And meet fellow, intelligent, insightful, fans of the true Dune.

Gonna go with everyone else and state that KJA's "critical darlings" rant did introduce me to some great authors, namely Iain M. Banks and Ursula K. Leguin. Really though, he just threw out the names...discussing the books with people here is what pointed me in the right direction.

I suppose if my heater stops working in the dead of winter, I'll be able to put my copies of KJA's crap to good use, too...

I almost feel too much animosity toward TheKJA to thank the bum for anything. But if I had to, I'd thank Combover for making me appreciate FH's work that much more and for showing me that a person can be a miserable, arrogant prick with low self esteem in spite of being an "award-winning" hack ... er, author.

I thank he who shall not be named for giving me purpose. If it weren't for him I would be nowhere near as interested in answering the "why" questions about SF. For example, "why does this suck so badly?"

Its certainly interesting how witnessing the worst in 'writing' can lead one to seek out the best. It's pretty hard to beat KJA in published hackery.

I was inspired to write stories for the first time since school.

"Trannies of Dune" won the coveted Jacurutu Jackal Award, didn't it ?

I was a friend of Frank Herbert. When I asked myself having children, he learnt me it could be damaging...
