Chapter 52

What am I eliminating? The bourgeois infatuation with peaceful conservation of
the past. This is a binding force, a thing which holds humankind into one
vulnerable unit in spite of illusionary separations across parsecs of space. If
I can find the scattered bits, others can find them. When you are together, you
can share a common catastrophe. You can be exterminated together. Thus, I
demonstrate the terrible danger of a gliding, passionless mediocrity, a movement
without ambitions or aims. I show you that entire civilizations can do this
thing. I give you eons of life which slips gently toward death without fuss or
stirring, without even asking 'Why?' I show you the false happiness and the
shadow-catastrophe called Leto, the God Emperor. Now, will you learn the real
happiness?

-The Stolen Journals

It is the morning before Leto's wedding peregrination's arrival at Tuono, Moneo pleads for thopters to provide security and Leto refuses. Leto notes that he has been first tempted with evil and now he is being tempted with good. He asks Moneo, if he chooses good, does that make him good? Moneo thinks so and Leto thinks he will never lose the ability to judge. Moneo is upset that Leto sent his guards away to eat. He asks Leto what will happen this day but Leto only tells him to take charge of his own life. Hwi emerges from breakfast, she tells Leto that she knows one of his secrets, he speaks directly to the senses with his own life. This sends a shudder through Leto's length and it is a moment before he can speak. Leto tells her that he has had little time between being superhuman and inhuman he has had little space to be human, and he thanks her for that little space.

Revised.

Was Leto pleased or disappointed that Moneo will always judge?

I think he was disappointed because it emphasized how much Moneo was a seeker after absolutes. He depended on them as he depended on his God Emperor.
