Re: packed PDF test
okay, this works ...
the above jpeg is hosted at photobucket in the SandRider_bucket account;
it is 1.16MB in size;
right-click and "save as" to your machine;
{or do whatever it is you do to download an image with the Mac}
drop the jpeg into the 7zip compression/extraction application;
click "extract";
the file will unpack into 2 files, both complete texts of the book:
one .99MB PDF & one 754KB RTF document
the PDF is extremely clear, formatted well & easy to read;
the RTF document is single spaced;
if you don't use 7zip, first just try opening the jpeg file as-is,
in whatever application you use ...
I believe winRAR will require renaming the file to the .rar filetype,
and others may as well ...
Windows7 Explorer cannot recognize the file as a compressed file with the .jpg filetype,
and just renaming it with a .zip extension doesn't seem to work ....(renaming it .rar
in Explorer on my machine makes it recognizable as a filetype associated with 7zip,
so I get an "open with 7zip" button on the toolbar; this works, too ...)
@Omph - what's your legal spidey-sense telling you about posting these kinds of compressed .pdf's?
I'm sure this (current) book is covered by alot of copyright horseshit - any of it apply to this here?
all the stuff on Gutenberg is public domain, tho ...

Re: packed PDF test
Omph - never got a reply here -
what's the legal issues (to the board(s) & The Tidwell) regarding this ?
photobucket still hasn't deleted these - I figger they ain't looked hard enough, or nobody's snitched me out yet ....
what about just posting the compressed jpegs of some books, say the ones some of us use around here for reference, f'instance,
and just pointing the newbies to the thread ? technically, the board is not "hosting" the material, it's on my personal photobucket
account - the board is "hosting" an internet hyperlink ... the word "facilitating" pops into my head, but that could just be the
cough medicine ....
anyway, I think it's an elegant solution - right click the image on the board, download the image, decompress, viola ...
and yeah, this should probably be in a PM or in the clubhouse, but I don't think the HLP's lawyers got no teeth no more ....
{and that there's a triple-negative; don't y'all be trying that none at home now, y'hear ?}

Wow, it worked. Couldn't open "The Zombie Guide" without a program that can read .lit files though.

What's not cool is a thread trying to load 2.6 MB of file.

Hey Chig,
how are you doing this on a Mac? I had to use Springy (a free archive tool).
Edited to add: nice trick, though, SR.

I'm still very proud of The Quarry but … let's face it; in the end the real best way to sign off would have been with a great big rollicking Culture novel.

this thing converts just about any e-book format into just about any other e-book format, or just a plain .pdf; it's free, open-source;
the interface is like an audio player with library features - it sucks up the location of whatever kind of e-book or text document you tell it to,
puts it in the library, where you can tag and sort and so forth, and using the ISBN number, will go on-line to fill out the "information" data,
author, publisher, edition, &etc and download the cover if it's available - if you're importing from packed jpegs that use the book cover
for the medium, you can use that image, or whatever image you want - like album covers ...
from the library you can open any file in the "e-book viewer", which I've found to be just fine ....
lurk moar ...SadisticCynic wrote:It's a neat trick. How d'you do it?
ooops.SandChigger wrote:What's not cool is a thread trying to load 2.6 MB of file.
didn't think about that; I've gotten used to this semi-highspeed internet connection ...
I'm looking at the file sizes of all the different .pdfs and packed jpegs I have - they vary widely ...
I don't know much about that, never really paid attention - the pdf of Dune I have is 3.27mb -
but the God-emperor is 608k ... the Zombie Jane Austen above is 1.16mb - but the four Arthur
C. Clarke novels packed into one .png is 526k .... the Oxford Book of American Poetry is 12.6mb ...
somebody will have to sort this out and figure out how to get the file sizes down to whatever
the acceptable level will be - I wasn't even thinking about that, I'm guessing deal breaker will
be all the copyright violations going on here ...
I can put all the books up as packed jpegs or pngs on photobucket, and post links here, but that's
just the same as posting a link to a pdf download elsewhere; defeats the purpose - hell, with this,
you can just drag and drop the image from the browser page into a Windows Explorer form, and it's
copied - unzip and there it is ...
anyway, y'all kick this around, we'll figure something out ... in the meantime, try the calibre thing,
and poke around on the chans in the /lit/ boards - that's where all the stuff is ... I'll look for and
post the links to the ones I found that are worthwhile when I can - I've really stopped using bookmarks
for anything other than often-visited sites - I've just been copying urls into angelwriter and saving the
doc as html, and bookmarking the html document; the browser shows the doc and all the urls are links ...
and I have little to no idea where I put the ebooks links ...
I'll post links to the source sites until Omph issues a cease-and-desist ...

At all.
I open Activity before I open this thread and when I see the two big files start to load, I fuck the sucker with extreme prejudice. Then I type my comment and submit it, and close the tab before the thread tries to load again.

what kind of internet connection do you have at your home ?
I remember you talking about bloated pages before, and keeping a
no-frills "default" theme for the board ...
